The temperatures as of late have been feeling much closer to mid-September and we are not complaining! Fall is the best time of year for fashion and we have been working away at debuting some new lines and styles for the season. There will be lots of announcements over the next few weeks including some necessary fall basics, new giftware lines and lots of lovely little things for your wonderful life!
Most of the products in the shop stem from my own personal fashion quests- Esther Williams was the answer to the flattering-for-all-body-types swimsuit, Saltwater Sandals as the affordable leather sandal that is comfortable enough to wear every day, and Baggu as the perfect unerstated canvas backpack. So I'm very excited to announce I've been working away at finding the perfect tshirt for quite some time and think I may have found it! We will now be carrying a line of basic t's from as colour, a company from New Zealand. Their products are all classic cuts, fabrics, colours and flattering on all body types.
The first tshirt we'll be debuting is the Mali which is a looser style with scalloped hem that features a great relaxed fit and extra long length. I like to think of this as the boyfriend tee- feminine where it should be but nice and comfortable, and never tight. These tshirts are the perfect summer to fall transitional piece as they look great with a pair of shorts or layered over a pair of skinny jeans. At $24 each you can afford to stock up!
We have the shirts in our favourite classic colours: black, white, and heather grey.
And a lovely merlot-burgundy and greyish-blue to transition you into your fall colours.
More styles to come soon as the season changes- and excited to announce more basics coming soon! Enjoy the weather, lovelies!
We had a great shoot this past Sunday for our Spring 2014 Lookbook debuting this Friday at our One Year Anniversary party! The inspiration for our spring collection was simple, feminine and fresh looks with pops of florals and bright colours. Featuring a mix of ladylike dresses and classic denim pieces, this collection really sums up my personal style. It was such a joy to shoot! We spent the day on location in Dundas at Dyment's Farm, which was the perfect location! The Dyment family has been a staple in the Hamilton community for years and it was so fun to shoot there, as I remember it from being a kid. The farm offered the perfect backdrop to the clothing and we lucked into some beautiful weather.
Our lovely model, Carrie, from Spot 6 Management was the beauty in our last lookbook and I couldn't wait to work with her again. She's such a joy on set as she is so cooperative and lively. When I imagine the perfect "Girl on the Wing" she comes to mind instantly. Such a classic beauty with so much character and even though she's just finishing up high school she exudes class and confidence. Love this girl! Such a smarty pants too- bringing her adorable cozy poncho to warm up between shots.
Our photographer was the wonderful Vai Yu Law who had previously shot our summer 2013 and fall 2013 lookbooks. I love working with her because she is so calm and collected on set and knows how to get the shots she wants. I feel so lucky to have her on my team and am always floored when I see the final shots she captured.
This shoot was our first time working with Hair and Makeup artist, Melissa Keenan, and she did such an amazing job! I instantly felt like I'd known her for years and loved all her ideas for changing up the hair and makeup between each shot. For someone so young, she already has an amazing work ethic and style to her work.
And as always we had our set/props whiz, Amanda Cordero on hand to help us frame the shots and beautify the whole thing! I met Amanda a year ago at the Vintage Marketplace and she has been such a godsend! I sent her a photo of a ukulele I wanted to recreate and she made it just perfectly! Stay tuned for our upcoming Anniversary window that she's designing, also to debut this Friday!
We also had two lovely assistants; Nylene Rimando (hair&makeup) and Vanessa Smikle (wardrobe) who helped make the team what it was. It was so fun having them there and their help was much appreciated!
All in all it was a great day- perfect weather (well, minus the wind), a lovely team of talented women, beautiful clothing and the perfect setting! Can't wait to share all the photos with you this Friday at our Anniversary party from 6-9pm.
With the changing weather we're excited to be getting lots of new products in the shop to help refresh your spring wardrobe! There's still a shiver in the air but with the recent reappearance of the sun, spring is the only thing on my mind! I long for the day when I can leave the house without a parka and snowboots. It's going to be here before we know it and we're starting to plan the store's spring season. We've got some exciting new product lines coming in, some stellar vintage and must-have accessories on their way. Today's spring fashion inspiration is all about folky florals.
Alberta Ferretti's spring 2014 collection was heavily influenced by various European folk cultures, specifically Hungarian floral embroidery. I've always had a love for traditional European clothing for it's intricate and decorative designs on simple, well-cut clothing. With Ferretti's latest collection, she brings this traditional folk style to a high-fashion level.
I love the way Ferretti mixes simple, feminine silhouettes with decorative embroidery and pattern. All the pieces are based in either black and white with pops of bright colours- most notably in vibrant pinks and reds, tangerine oranges, and a bold lavender. The looks feature cropped tops, tiered skirts, empire waists and full skirts. My favourite part of the collection is how she bridges the gap between so many European styles; long, flowy Grecian style dresses, hints of Parisian chic, traditional Hungarian details and Ferreti's native Italian romantic style.
How to Get the Look:
Vintage Top, Folk Heart Earrings, Vintage Silk Skirt, Hibou Fringe Necklace, Vintage Top, Flower Girls postcard set. All Items Available at Girl on the Wing.

It'll be a great night and a perfect way to kick off your valentines season. Bring your favourite girls and make it a Galentines to remember! We also have some cute valentines cards for your special someone and will be putting out some special guy's wear!
I'm so excited to announce a new jewelry line in shop by the talented designer Adina Mills. I met Adina at the Bust Magazine Craftacular, which is a craft show highlighting all types of designers in New York City. As soon as I saw her pieces from across the room I made a beeline for her booth.
Adina uses intricate methods to produce her work and combines precious stones and hand carving. Using clay, Adina sculpts a beautiful piece that complements each stone, lovingly handpicked by her. She then paints the clay to produce a truly one-of-a-kind piece. I always love jewelry with precious stones but was feeling like most things being designed were falling into the same esthetic. Adina's designs break the mould and are truly "wearable art". Originally from California, this designer has spent the past few years living in a vintage motorhome and traveling around getting inspiration and creating wherever she is.
We think she's amazing at what she does and are excited to carry her work in the shop. Take a look at some of the pieces in our collection:
Well we're already 9 days into 2014 but let me officially wish you all a very HAPPY NEW YEAR! 2013 was a great year for the shop...I mean we opened! 2014 is going to be just as meaningful and we have lots of great stuff planned. Keep an eye and ear out for some exciting new product lines, new lookbooks, more events and an online shop!
2014 is the Year of the Horse, so I figured it was a great excuse to share some of my favourite vintage horse photos. I've always loved anything equestrian themed; from the lucky horseshoes hanging at my house to old riding competition ribbons, one of my favourite things to collect is anything horse-related. The year has started a bit slow for me (thanks flu!) and while I wanted to enter 2014 like Bianca Jagger entering her birthday party at Studio 54 on a white horse, it wasn't quite so glamorous. But the year is fresh and I'm so excited for all that is coming!
To me horses symbolize grace, tradition, strength, femininity, and sophistication. A life with horses seems like a quaint and dignified one, so I'm going to use them as an example for how I hope to model my new year, both personally and professionally.
Wishing you all a happy, successful year filled with good times with friends and family!
