Growing up, the country fair was synonomous with thanksgiving. Every year I'd go to the Rockton Fair with family or friends and it was really when all the fall feelings would start. The combination of the fresh country air, sweet funnel cakes and the demolition derby meant that my favourite season, fall, was here. That's why I thought it would be the perfect place to shoot our Fall lookbook. The team at the Rockton Agricultural Society was so helpful and accommodating and gave us free reign over the fair. There's such an overall friendly feeling at the fair whether with the farmers, the event organizers or the entertainers, and so many of our shots couldn't have been captured with a little help from these new friends.
Our team was made up of Hamilton-based creative women and we had such a fun day together. Our lovely photographer, Kate Benfey brought her usual chipper demeanour and did a great job at thinking on the fly for each shot. This was our first shoot together in such a busy place and it required lots of creative quick-thinking, but with Kate's calm way of working, everything was always under control. On hair and makeup, Brenda Beltran of Vibrant Beauty did an amazing job creating some soft and fresh looks. The inspiration was natural beauty and she focused on rosy cheeks, dewy skin and effortless hair. She's so good at thinking of ideas quickly and her braiding skills were top notch!
It was so exciting to get to work with model Delaney Stone again. She's really been with Girl on the Wing from the beginning, as a customer and model, and she's just part of our little family now. We always have so much fun shooting together and she brings so much beauty and personality to every thing she does. My friend Mariah Hamilton came to assist for the day and it was great to have her help. Her energy is truly contagious and she got some beautiful shots for our first-ever behind-the-scenes video! As for styling and art direction, I was inspired by classic country looks mixed with touches of femininity and quirkiness. The wonderful team mixed with the perfect setting made my job easy.
We can't thank the folks at the Rockton Fair enough for all their help in capturing this season's lookbook. I'm already counting the days down until next year! Check out some behind-the-scenes footage of the shoot and we're excited to share the final photos with you next week!
We had a great shoot this past Sunday for our Spring 2014 Lookbook debuting this Friday at our One Year Anniversary party! The inspiration for our spring collection was simple, feminine and fresh looks with pops of florals and bright colours. Featuring a mix of ladylike dresses and classic denim pieces, this collection really sums up my personal style. It was such a joy to shoot! We spent the day on location in Dundas at Dyment's Farm, which was the perfect location! The Dyment family has been a staple in the Hamilton community for years and it was so fun to shoot there, as I remember it from being a kid. The farm offered the perfect backdrop to the clothing and we lucked into some beautiful weather.
Our lovely model, Carrie, from Spot 6 Management was the beauty in our last lookbook and I couldn't wait to work with her again. She's such a joy on set as she is so cooperative and lively. When I imagine the perfect "Girl on the Wing" she comes to mind instantly. Such a classic beauty with so much character and even though she's just finishing up high school she exudes class and confidence. Love this girl! Such a smarty pants too- bringing her adorable cozy poncho to warm up between shots.
Our photographer was the wonderful Vai Yu Law who had previously shot our summer 2013 and fall 2013 lookbooks. I love working with her because she is so calm and collected on set and knows how to get the shots she wants. I feel so lucky to have her on my team and am always floored when I see the final shots she captured.
This shoot was our first time working with Hair and Makeup artist, Melissa Keenan, and she did such an amazing job! I instantly felt like I'd known her for years and loved all her ideas for changing up the hair and makeup between each shot. For someone so young, she already has an amazing work ethic and style to her work.
And as always we had our set/props whiz, Amanda Cordero on hand to help us frame the shots and beautify the whole thing! I met Amanda a year ago at the Vintage Marketplace and she has been such a godsend! I sent her a photo of a ukulele I wanted to recreate and she made it just perfectly! Stay tuned for our upcoming Anniversary window that she's designing, also to debut this Friday!
We also had two lovely assistants; Nylene Rimando (hair&makeup) and Vanessa Smikle (wardrobe) who helped make the team what it was. It was so fun having them there and their help was much appreciated!
All in all it was a great day- perfect weather (well, minus the wind), a lovely team of talented women, beautiful clothing and the perfect setting! Can't wait to share all the photos with you this Friday at our Anniversary party from 6-9pm.
Yesterday we had a great lookbook shoot in the country! I'm so excited to share the photos with you at our Fall Launch next Friday but for now, here are some behind the scenes shots and a little bit about the wonderful team that made it all possible!
Vai Yu Law was our amazing photographer. She shot out summer lookbook and I am always so happy to work with her. Her calm and cool demeanour on set makes her such a dream to work with and she has such a knack for directing the model while making her feel comfortable. With every shoot I do I always have such a vision in my head of how I want it to look and Vai Yu takes that and makes it ten times better than I ever could have imagined. Hope to be able to collaborate with this wonderful lady for years to come!
Christina Spina was the amazing hair and makeup artist. I could go on and on about how much I love this lady but the real important thing is how talented she is at what she does. With experience in so many areas of the industry, Christina always brings such a professional yet fun vibe to each shoot. We've worked on many shoots together and although I always seem to ask her for the same simple looks she always gives me something different and classic. For this shoot she did a beautiful fresh face with rosy cheeks and apple red lips and the sweetest country girl braid. I see big things for this girl on the horizon and feel so honoured that she is always there for me!
Natascha C was our beautiful model from Spot 6. It was my first time working with her but I hope not the last. She looked so adorable as the country girl and I couldn't have asked for a better fit...it was like the outfits, hair and setting were all designed for her. This girl was such a pleasure to work with and while there were times I felt like she was my doll and was putting her in strange places and positions, she never complained once. She's got such a bright future ahead of her and is beautiful inside and out (cheesy, but true!).
Trisha Topalopoulos was my wonderful wardrobe/styling assistant. Many of you have seen her in the shop working and it's hard to forget her outgoing and bubbly personality. Over the past few months we've gotten to do lots of cool stuff for the shop together and I'm so blessed to have her. She is such an expert at keeping things organized and is the ying to my yang when it comes to this sort of thing. We've developed such an amazing way of working together and she just understands my styling direction and we can put together amazing things together. So glad to have her as my permanent right-hand woman.
Amanda Cordero was our talented prop/setting/visual/ woman of all trades assistant. She's played a huge role in the shop and been the brains behind our past few window displays. Amanda is so great to have on set because I can tell her my idea (as crazy or random as it may sound) and she just goes to work and makes it happen. Everytime I'd come outside to see what she'd put together I was amazed at how she took this image from my brain and made it real. The best part about her is her resourcefulness in getting things accomplished- sometimes it seems like she has one of those magic Mary Poppins bags somewhere because she just seems to pull magic from nothing. So glad to have her on my team.
Stefan Meier was our wonderful handyman/ heavy lifter/ gracious host and make-it-happen-man. He was so great to offer us his house and property to shoot at and was such a joy to have around. As much as I love working with a group of women, having him around was a breath of fresh air. Whether he was repositioning his tractor or setting up the perfect apple-picking shot, this guy was on it. So glad to have been able to collaborate together and show off his amazing place!
Finally, Gypsy and Cat were our furry friends on set and managed to make it into some shots. They were both adorable and surprisingly natural at modeling. Plus they made the day a whole lot cuter.
Can't wait to share all the shots with you soon!
